White Collar Hat by GIL
The White Collar Hat by artist and designer GIL is both an homage to and a critical commentary on what is commonly referred to as “corporate” aesthetics. The website Aesthetics Wiki describes this phenomenon as follows: “Corporate is an aesthetic that relates to business attire, referring to the clothing employees wear to work. Depending on the workplace, various levels of formality are expected, ranging from traditional and formal to smart casual, business casual, and casual.” GIL takes this concept to another level. The White Collar Hat is not simply an existing object recontextualized; rather, it is a completely new fashion piece that plays with the semiotics of clothing—specifically, the classic business shirt and tie—transforming them into wearable headpieces. GIL’s background in fashion enabled him to produce this first hat series, which, due to its relatively complex nature, could only be realized in China at that time.
GIL is a Paris-based designer and artist. Trained as a fashion designer, his work and interests extend beyond traditional clothing, exploring more artistic approaches to utilizing his skills. Recurring themes in his work include clothing, its normative aspects, and the processes of deconstruction and reassembly.
The object is one-size-fits-all, thanks to an adjustable strap. The hat is made entirely of cotton and includes a removable tie.
