ConvexSHIELD by Johannes Thiel
ConvexSHIELD is a one-of-a-kind art piece created and crafted by Berlin-based artist and designer Johannes Thiel. His body of work ranges from graphic design to, more recently, a sculptural approach. In his art, he tackles themes of human-robot interaction, creating objects that appear almost alive. ConvexSHIELD is one of his earliest pieces. Its form is reminiscent of decoupled car body parts or mechanical coverings. The shield symbolizes a protective armor or shell, taking its final shape through a combination of individual fragments. A programmed Arduino board controls the movement of this mechanical being, transforming it into a performative object. ConvexSHIELD is crafted entirely by the artist himself, using laser-cut aluminum and 3D-modeled, printed elements. It consists of ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate), aluminum, a servo motor, and an Arduino.
Johannes Thiel (*1999, Germany) is an artist and designer working across a variety of media, including sculpture, installation, and digital works in sound, graphics, and rendering. His interests span computer-generated organic forms, futuristic bodies, and precise technical constructions, often placed within the context of natural, living structures and objects produced by industrial culture. His work visualizes manufacturing processes and construction techniques, resulting in intersections between digitally generated objects and the physical world through automated processes such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC milling.
The object weighs approximately 7 kg and has the following dimensions: 40 x 50 x 38 cm.
