Porcelain Nail Ring “Platin” #1 (M) by Fatma Cankaya
Decorating fingernails is an age-old cultural practice dating back to ancient Egypt. In today’s era of mass consumption, however, this form of adornment generates a significant amount of waste, partly including toxic substances. Fatma Cankaya’s series “Fragile” reimagines nail art using a traditional material: porcelain. Each nail ring is hand-crafted by the artist herself and therefore unique. The resulting finger pieces can be worn and removed like rings, and the new material is perfect for creating luxurious ornaments. By utilizing porcelain, “Fragile” reinterprets a contemporary trend, expanding its potential rather than constraining it.
Fatma Cankaya is a Berlin-based designer. She moves between art and design, playing with expectations, breaking norms, and sparking reactions. For her, objects aren’t just things—they’re a way to comment on society, whether it’s about consumer culture, the pressure to succeed, or just the general chaos of modern life.
A lot of her inspiration comes from the internet—memes, pop culture, digital trends. She loves how these things reflect the times we live in and translates that energy into physical objects. Her work explores what we value as a society, how obsessed we are with success, and how design can challenge the way we see everyday things. Her pieces are bold, sculptural, and always make a statement—sometimes playful, sometimes critical, but never boring.
The piece comes with adjustable stainless steel rings that can be fitted to the wearer’s fingers. This is best done using a tong.
