Nyctinasty Light by Albert Gerstmair & Luis Frey
The kinetic light object Nyctinasty Light originates from a fascination with the forest and meadow flower wild carrot (Daucus carota), which spreads its umbels during the day and contracts them into a ball at nightfall. This functional principle, known as nyctinasty, is translated into an industrial context. The technically complex study and reproduction of this mechanism raises questions about the extent to which objects must serve a function—and what we expect from them. This light sculpture is limited to an edition of 10 pieces.
Luis Frey and Albert Gerstmair are studying Industrial Design at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany and share a passion for materials, accurate craftsmanship and experimental processes. Their collaborative work originates from a fascination for kinetic mechanics, materiality and curiosity about manufacturing techniques. The design duo's creative practice is located at the intersection of art and design: Soon after finishing a first prjoect together, they pursued an approach focused on questioning the status quo, offering new ideas to the existing.
